A Personal Trainer is a trained expert who helps you set your fitness goals and then achieve them through exercise and nutrition. Trainers work with all ages and all beginning physical conditions.

I’m not a Personal Trainer and I haven’t even played one in a movie. But I am a Certified Fitness Instructor and I’ve spent many years exercising in gyms. In fact, I met my wife in a gym. And she is a certified Personal Trainer.

This is the first of 3 articles. It deals with the circumstances when you should hire a Personal Trainer. The next article will describe what a Personal Trainer can do for you. The final article in the series will give you tips on hiring a Personal Trainer.

There are the 6 main reasons why you should hire a Personal Trainer . . .

1. You Are New To Exercise

Getting started the right way is crucial. A good trainer will establish a simple, safe and effective routine and then move you along as you become more comfortable. Your trainer will help you set goals and establish exercise and nutrition regimes to achieve those goals.

2. You Want To Break Through A Plateau

On the other hand, if you have been exercising a while and reach a point where you’re not making the progress you want, hiring a Trainer can be the way to bust through the plateau. A trainer can look at your current program and eating habits and help you see where you could make changes to achieve better results.

3. You Are Training For A Specific Sport

If you are training for a particular sport – golf, running, skiing, swimming, biking, softball, whatever — a trainer can improve your overall strength and endurance while also working on training techniques specific to your sport. This is the way to kick your buddies’ butts on the golf course.

4. You Are Rehabilitating

If you have been injured or have had surgery, working with an experienced Trainer (who works with your doctor, of course) can help you establish a program to help heal your injuries and avoid any future problems.

5. You Want to Work Out At Home

Doctors don’t make house calls anymore, but many Trainers will do in-home Personal Training. That’s right, they’ll literally bring fitness right into your living room! No equipment? No worry. Your Trainer will bring the necessary equipment to give you a great workout. And she can make recommendations for the equipment you can purchase that will help you reach your goals.

6. You Want To Lose Weight

The most common reason people hire Personal Trainers is to lose weight and to “get into shape.” An experienced Personal Trainer can design a custom program that consists of cardio, strength training, flexibility and nutrition.

So, what exactly do Personal Trainers do to help you? That’s the subject of the next article in this series.
