America’s Favorite Football Team

(I use sports to have fun and stay positive. As a football fan, I thought this was interesting information. I hope you will to.)

According to the Nielsen Co. – you know, the folks that do the TV ratings – the Dallas Cowboys are, by far, America’s favorite professional football team.

Nielsen developed a system for ranking the popularity of NFL teams based on each team’s local and national TV rankings, how often they’re mentioned on the Internet and how many visitors they attract to their official websites.

The report is based on figures from the 2009 season and is titled the “Nielsen Sports Media Exposure Index.”

These are some of the most interesting findings . . .

  • The Cowboys were a whopping 23% more popular than the No. 2 team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • The rest of the top 5 are the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings, all from the NFC North.
  • A winning tradition doesn’t guarantee a national fan base. Two of the NFL’s more successful and iconic franchises, the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers, finished near the bottom of the rankings despite owning a combined eight Super Bowl titles.
  • Despite the healthy rankings for the Packers and the New Orleans Saints (No. 9), the study suggests being in a smaller media market make it hard to develop a large national following. Five of the bottom 10 teams hail from Charlotte, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Tampa and St. Louis.

Although this is the first time Nielsen has done this study, separate research from the past two decades has shown similar results.

Harris Interactive, a New York market-research firm, has been asking respondents to name their favorite NFL team annually since 1992. The Cowboys came out No. 1 on 11 occasions in that poll and were never lower than No. 4.

Without further ado, here are the full Nielsen results . . .

Why “Football?”

Why do Americans call their favorite sport “football?”

I mean, the sport does not focus on the feet.

There is another sport which actually involves the feet.  Most of the world calls that football, or “futbol,” and that name accurately describes the game.

Thinking about this one day, I decided that we need a new name for American football. A more descriptive name.

Given the nature of the game, I first thought of Crashball or Collisionball.

Nah. Descriptive, but clunky.

Then it hit me.

Since the game is only played in North America, and since it is the most popular sport in the United States of America, how ‘bout Ameriball.

The quintessential American sport should be called Ameriball.

You have to admit, this name makes a lot more sense than football.

Who’s with me?
